Stop the illegal sale of Greek Cypriot land and property in Turkish occupied northern area of Cyprus
Call on the Bristish government to provide clear information to British nationals that it is illegal to purchase Greek Cypriot owned land in the occupied north of the island.

The property issue in brief

Following the invasion and occupation of the northern area of Cyprus in 1974 Turkish forces and their surrogates engaged in the seizure of property owned by Greek Cypriots in a flagrant violation of human rights.

The illegal regime in the occupied north produced bogus title-deeds in an attempt to create new ownership of the stolen lands and homes which were given to illegal colonists from Anatolia, Turkish Cypriots or sold to non-Cypriots, including thousands of Britons who illegally bought land and property cheaply.

We are calling on the British government to clearly inform the British public via the government’s website that it is unlawful to purchase such lands and properties and that any judgments against those illegally occupying land can be enforced against their assets in other EU member states as per the ‘Apostolides v Orams’ European Court of Justice decision of 2009.

Dear Prime Minister

We call on you and the British government to declare as illegal any transactions involving the acquisition or occupation by third parties of Greek Cypriot owned land or property in the Turkish occupied north of the Republic of Cyprus.

It is settled law that:

• Greek Cypriots remain the only valid title holders of their lands and properties in Turkish occupied north Cyprus (as per the Loizidou v Turkey European Court of Human Rights decision, 1996).

• The Republic of Cyprus courts have jurisdiction over the land in occupied Cyprus. Any judgments against those illegally occupying land can be enforced against their assets in other EU member states (as per the ‘Apostolides v Orams’ European Court of Justice decision, 2009).

We call on you to clearly inform the British public via the government’s website that it is unlawful to purchase such lands and properties.

Furthermore, we ask you and the British government to acknowledge that Turkey is the only obstacle to a negotiated settlement and to take all necessary steps to ensure that the President of Cyprus Mr Christofias and Mr Eroglu are allowed to negotiate freely and without Turkey’s interference and intimidation.
