The following letter was sent to the Prime Minister, Robin Cook and other senior Ministers prior the UK 2001 general election.

Rt Hon Robin Cook
Secretary of State for
Foreign and Commonwealth
Affairs Foreign &
Commonwealth Office

Dear Rt. Hon Robin Cook

I am writing to you on behalf of Lobby for Cyprus, a non-party-political organisation, representing a large proportion of the sizeable Greek Cypriot community in the UK.

I would like to take this opportunity to echo some of the sentiments of the majority of our compatriots in the community who feel that the Labour government has not yet done enough in order to restore justice in Cyprus. The overwhelming majority of our Greek Cypriot compatriots voted in favour of the Labour party at the last general election and are likely to do so again, but many of them feel that no significant change has been made from the Conservative years. However, the commitments given by you in March this year when addressing the community in north London has given us hope and confidence that the Labour government will deliver its promises.

Amongst other points, you stated that the Labour government will support the unconditional entry of Cyprus to the EU and that any settlement of the Cyprus issue will be based on a united state, with single sovereignty, single citizenship and with the full human rights of all Cypriots guaranteed.

The Cyprus issue is one of human rights violations on a massive scale by a foreign invading country, Turkey. This fact has once again been confirmed by the Supreme Court of Europe in its historic judgment against Turkey on 10 May 2001, in addition to the equally damning judgment against Turkey by the same European Court of Human Rights, in the now famous Loizidou versus Turkey case. Any settlement of the Cyprus issue must take the above legal decisions into consideration.

We hope and trust that after the election the Labour government will intensify efforts:

  • for a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus issue that will guarantee the Removal of all Turkish troops from the Republic of Cyprus; the humane Repatriation of all Turkish colonists; and the safe and unconditional Return of all refugees to their homes and properties;
  • for Cyprus' accession to the EU without conditions and restrictions;
  • for all the citizens of Cyprus to enjoy the same human rights and freedoms as all the other citizens of the European family of nations.

With best wishes

Yours sincerely
Lobby for Cyprus
