Hopes rise for Cyprus peace deal

The prospect of a peace deal in Cyprus before it joins the EU on May 1 has risen significantly following American talks with Turkey.

Reunification of the divided island could now be only months away, said Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, after a meeting in Washington with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul.

In talks with President George Bush on Wednesday, Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said his country was not only committed to a Cyprus solution but implored the US for help.

The peace process collapsed 10 months ago when, with the blessing of Ankara, the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, declared the UN proposals "dead"."
