Nadir may feel the heat

ONE person watching the increasing rapprochement between the disputed state of northern Cyprus and the Greek-dominated south with concern is the island’s most famous fugitive, Asil Nadir. The former head of the Polly Peck empire jumped bail and fled to northern Cyprus ten years ago almost to the day.

The aim of both Turkey and any eventually united island is membership of the EU, which would allow Nadir to be extradited from his comfy bolthole.

Meanwhile, coincidentally, Robert Wardle became the new head of the Serious Fraud Office less than a fortnight ago. Wardle was in charge of the SFO’s pursuit of Nadir when he skipped the country and has made it clear he will never give up the attempt to bring him to justice."
