As the world observes “International Human Rights Day,” December 10, to mark the 60th anniversary of the passage of the United Nations’ “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Lobby for Cyprus calls attention to the ongoing violation of human rights of Greek Cypriots in the illegally occupied north of the Republic of Cyprus.

One witness has reported that shortly after the bodies were buried, he noticed a fire started by the Turkish army and, upon enquiring about it, he was told that the recent rain had uncovered some of the bodies and the Turkish Army was burning the bodies.

Once again Turkey is using Turkish Cypriots as a strategic minority, much like Germany in the 1930s used Sudetenland Germans to advance its own national interests. This time the issue is oil and gas exploration. In a recent statement a Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman objected to the oil and gas exploration by the Republic of Cyprus in international waters off the southern coast of Cyprus.

Lobby for Cyprus is calling for the set up of an independent inquiry for the investigation of the fate of the approximately 1,500 still-missing Greek Cypriots following the 1974 invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in line with the demands of the European Court of Human Rights.
