United Nations recognises right of refugees to return

The United Nations Commission in a meeting in Geneva on 28 August 1997, adopted two resolutions confirming the right of refugees that have been forced to leave their homes, to return to them.

The resolution called on governments and other entities "to do everything possible to stop and prevent all practices of forced displacement, forced transfers and ethnic cleansing".

One of the two resolutions adopted unequivocally stated inter alia, of "the fundamental right of refugees and internally displaced persons to RETURN voluntarily, in safety and dignity to their place of origin".

In December 1996 the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Titina Loizidou vs Turkey confirmed the LEGAL RIGHT of the Greek Cypriot refugees to return. Now, in August 1997, the United Nations Commission on Discrimination and Minorities, confirms the inalienable HUMAN RIGHT of refugees to return to their homes.

Denktash, Ankara and co, take note...
