RE: The promotion of occupied Cyprus as a holiday destination

Dear [name/title/sir/madam etc]

I am writing to complain about the [feature/advertisment/programme – specify where it appeared and date] that promotes as a holiday destination the northern part of Cyprus, which is currently under illegal Turkish military occupation.

I am deeply offended by the advertisements which claim that the occupied area is ‘unspoilt’ – this is not the case.

Following the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous 200,000 Greek Cypriots, concerted efforts have been made to destroy the rich Greek, Christian and European cultural heritage of the occupied area.

To suggest that the occupied north is ‘unspoilt’ is completely untrue. More than 530 churches and monasteries have been pillaged, vandalised, or destroyed. Churches, chapels and monasteries have been converted to military storage facilities, stables and night-clubs, churches have been converted to mosques, used as military facilities, stockyards or hay barns. All the Greek names of towns and villages have been renamed in Turkish to erase any trace of the history and culture of the island. It not for nothing that this is often described as a ‘cultural genocide’ in occupied Cyprus.

Thousands of Greek Cypriots in [the UK/London], many of them exiled victims see these adverts on a daily basis and like myself are distressed and deeply offended by the false information they include.

I look forward to hearing from you on this upsetting matter.

Yours [sincerely/faithfully]

RE: The promotion of occupied Cyprus as a holiday destination

Dear [name/title/sir/madam etc]

As a Greek Cypriot forced to flee from the invading Turkish army from the very areas you promote as holiday destination, in the illegally occupied north of Cyprus, I find your [reader offer/advertisment/promotion/programme] extremely upsetting.

You are rewarding an illegal regime that has usurped the land and property from those who are denied the basic human right to return.

A [newspaper/magazine/televsion/programme/orgainisation] of your repute should be familiar with the ethnic cleansing of the Greek Cypriots. The facts are indisputable. Cyprus remains occupied by the Turkish military with more than 40,000 troops enforcing the partition of the island where 200,000 Greek Cypriots became refugees, approximately one third of the total island population.

As for the culture of occupied Cyprus, perhaps you should point out that thousands of years of Greek culture has been eradicated since 1974 through the renaming of towns and villages into Turkish and the desecration and plundering of hundreds of churches and cemeteries.

The majority of the hotels in the occupied are the property of Greek Cypriots or built on land owned by Greek Cypriots therefore you are encouraging your [readers/viewers] to commit trespass.

Perhaps you would be honest enough with your [readers/viewers] and present the true picture of occupied Cyprus to them and refrain from advertising the illegally occupied area of Cyprus as a holiday destination while the legitimate inhabitants are prevented from returning.

I look forward to your response on this upsetting matter.

Yours [sincerely/faithfully]
